DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: VICTIMIZATION AGAINST WHO IN BENIN CITY, NIGERIA?
Abstract
Over the decade there has been incidence of domestic violence and various authorities have seen it from different angles, especially when it results to fatality among spouses. There have been reasons for domestic violence committed against spouses irrespective of sex, status and position. This study examines the perception of residents in Benin City on victimization of domestic violence in the metropolis, its causes and implications. This expository study adopts the triangulation of both the qualitative and quantitative method of data collection and analysis on 405 respondents. The study discovers that although the female spouse constitute majority of the abused, the male on the other hand are victims in silence due to social stigma of “names calling”. Also the results of most silent abused are fatal, based on this and other findings the study advocates that all concerned must put an end to this disaster called domestic violence as the ripple effect will potent danger for the future generation.
