IMPACT OF HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON EMPLOYEE JOB SATISFACTION IN PASSENGER TRANSPORT COMPANIES IN IMO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract


This study investigated the impact of Human Resources Management Practices on Employee Job Satisfaction among employees of passenger transport companies in Imo State of Nigeria. On the basis of structured questionnaire administered on 302 employees of ABC Transport Plc, the largest passenger transport  company in Imo state, Nigeria, it was shown that human resources management practices have strong significant and positive impact on employee job satisfaction. (R2=.873, F (5.256=347.877, p.000). It was also shown that four dimensions of human resources management practices of recruitment and chosing, training and development, compensation and performance appraisal were strong predicators of job satisfaction with training and development being the strongest. It was recommended that passenger transport companies should, via periodic job satisfaction survey, ensure the context, content, structure and implementation of human resources practices  tallies with what  lead to job satisfaction of employees especially in area of recruitment and chosing, training and development, compensation and appraisal system. To achieve this, it was also   recommended   that a compensation system that is equitable internally and externally, internally by being at par with employee experience, education, job risk /peculiarity level and other inputs, an appraisal system that is high in procedural justice or whose implementation strategy is shown to be fair and just to all concerned and a training programme that is need based arising from training need analysis and individually targeted be instituted by passenger transport companies
