ACADEMIC STRESS AND ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENT AMONG UNDERGRADUATES IN BENUE STATE: IMPLICATIONS FOR EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT
Abstract
This study investigated Academic Stress and Academic Adjustment among Undergraduates of the Center for Undergraduate Studies, College of Education, Katsina-Ala, Benue State. Correlational design was adopted for this study. Two research questions were raised and two hypotheses formulated for the study. The area of the study was the Centre of Undergraduate Studies, College of Education, Katsina-Ala. The population of the study was all the 1, 951 undergraduates of the 10 Departments in the institution. Multistage sampling technique was adopted to sample 397 respondents. A structured questionnaire titled ‘Academic Stress and Academic Adjustment Questionnaire, (ASAAQ) was used for data collection. A four point modified rating scale was used to establish the disparity in the respondents’ opinions. Thus, Strongly Agree (SA) =4; Agree (A) =3; Disagree (D) =2; Strongly Disagree (SD) =1 were used by respondents to respond to each questionnaire. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used for testing the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha. The study found out that there is a significant negative relationship between financial stress and examination anxiety and academic adjustment of undergraduate students. The study recommends that undergraduates should be provided with adequate guidance and counselling services to be able to adequately adjust academically to the challenges of undergraduate programmes for success.
