INDECENT DRESSING AND ITS IMPLICATIONS ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF FEMALE UNDERGRADUATES: TAI SOLARIN UNIVERSTY OF EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

Abstract

The sanctity of socially acceptable mode of dressing has been a cultural norm that is fully entrenched in the African society. This gave birth to a popular adage among the Yorubas of Nigeria that says “irinisi ni isonilojo” meaning “The way you dress is the way you are going to be addressed. This research adopted descriptive survey research design with the target population comprising all the female students of Tai Solarin University of Education in Ogun State. A simple random sampling technique was used in selecting the sample size which cut across the four Colleges in the institution with three hundred and sixty (360) respondents selected for the study. Chi square was used to analyze the hypothesis formulated for the study while descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages were used to analyze the demographic information of the respondents. The findings finally revealed that there is no significant relationship between indecent dressing and academic performance of students while there is significant relationship between indecent dressing and social lives of the students. In view of the findings, it was therefore recommended that conferences, seminars and workshops should be organized for both staff and students to create awareness on the importance of clothing behavior in the society.
